That’s still cheaper than Surfer SEO ($89/month for Essential) and a fraction of Clearscope ($189/month). For our Frase review 2026 we wanted to answer one question with hard numbers: does the cheaper price come with cheaper output, or has Frase quietly closed the gap?
We’ve used Frase on and off since 2022 for client SEO work, but we wanted a fresh, contained 30-day sprint on the current Basic + Pro plan — not memory. From mid-March to mid-April 2026 we ran 22 content briefs and 14 article optimisations across three real client niches: SaaS productivity, freelance finance, and meal-kit reviews. Same testing framework we use across every tool in the Best AI Tools for Freelancers 2026 hub.
Short verdict: Frase is the best content brief builder per dollar in 2026, and the Topic Score genuinely correlates with ranking moves. But the AI writer is mid, the Basic plan cap bites earlier than the marketing implies, and shallow SERP analysis on long-tail queries leaves you doing manual work the tool was supposed to remove.
How we tested Frase
The three client niches were a deliberate spread. The SaaS productivity client wanted commercial-intent reviews and comparisons (high competition, dense SERPs). The freelance finance client wanted explainer guides for US contractors (moderate competition, clean SERPs). The meal-kit client wanted long-tail product roundups (low-volume, often shallow SERP data). That spread tested Frase across the three SERP shapes most freelance content writers actually deal with.

What Frase does well
Content briefs are the killer feature — and they hold up
This is what Frase is built for, and it remains the headline strength. Paste a target query, and within 60–90 seconds Frase scrapes the top 14–20 ranking pages, extracts the headings, surfaces the most-cited topics, calculates an average word count, and pulls the People Also Ask block. The brief that comes out the other side is the structural skeleton most freelance content writers spend 30–45 minutes building manually.
For our SaaS productivity client we built a brief for “best project management tools for freelancers” — a competitive commercial query. Frase pulled 16 ranking competitors, surfaced 47 distinct topic clusters (kanban boards, time tracking, integrations, free plans, client portals…), and generated a starter outline with 8 H2 sections. Total time from query input to usable brief: 6 minutes. The same brief built manually — Ahrefs SERP overview, copy/paste 14 H2 lists into a doc, manually count topic frequency — took us 38 minutes the week before. Across 22 briefs in 30 days, that’s roughly 10 hours saved.
Topic Score actually correlates with ranking moves
Most “content score” tools feel like SEO theatre. Frase’s Topic Score is one of the few we’ve tested where the number genuinely tracks performance. Of the 14 client articles we updated to a Topic Score of 75+ (up from an average starting score of 38), 9 moved up in Google rankings within 28 days, with an average gain of +6.4 positions tracked in Ahrefs. Two articles that were stuck on page two (positions 14 and 18) moved to positions 6 and 9 respectively after a Topic Score lift from 41 to 81.
The five articles that didn’t move had different problems — either weak backlink profiles, brand-new domains, or queries dominated by Reddit and YouTube where on-page optimisation alone won’t dislodge UGC. That’s not a Frase failure; it’s a reminder that a content score is one input in a ranking model that has many. But for the 64% of articles that did move, the cost-per-position-gained came out to about $14 — cheap by any client SEO budget.

The price-to-output ratio beats every alternative we’ve tested
Frase Basic is $45/month for 30 articles. Add the Pro add-on for $35/month and you get unlimited AI writing on top. That’s $80/month all-in for the workflow most freelance content writers actually run. The same workflow on Surfer SEO Essential is $89/month and caps content scoring at 30 articles too — Frase undercuts it by $9/month with a slightly more generous AI writing allowance. Clearscope Essentials is $189/month for similar functionality — twice the price for output we found broadly comparable in side-by-side tests on five identical queries.
For our meal-kit client we ran the same query — “best meal kits for two people” — through all three tools. Frase generated 41 topic recommendations and a 9-section outline. Surfer generated 38 recommendations and a 7-section outline. Clearscope generated 44 recommendations and a 10-section outline. Quality of recommendations was within margin of error. At $80, $89, and $189/month respectively, Frase is the better-priced product for what most freelancers actually do.
Where Frase falls short
The AI writer is mid — and rewriting it costs more time than writing it yourself
The Pro add-on promises unlimited AI content generation, and Frase’s writer is built directly into the brief editor. In theory: hit “Write For Me”, get a draft, edit, publish. In our testing, theory and practice diverged sharply. We used the AI writer to draft three full articles (1,500 words each) on the same brief our human writer would have used. The output was structurally fine — covered the topics, hit the word count, used H2s sensibly — but the prose was generic, the examples were invented (one “case study” referenced a company that doesn’t exist), and the tone defaulted to mid-2010s SEO content with phrases like “in today’s digital landscape”.
Editing the 1,500-word AI draft into a publishable client piece took 38 minutes. Writing the same piece from scratch using the Frase brief took 52 minutes. The “saving” was 14 minutes — but the AI version came with hallucinations we had to fact-check, breaking trust with the client when one slipped through draft review and was caught at proofread. After three test runs we abandoned the AI writer for production work and used Frase strictly for briefs and scoring. Claude or ChatGPT directly produces better-quality drafts at this point.
SERP analysis stalls on long-tail and niche queries
Frase’s brief quality is only as good as the SERP it can scrape. On commercial and informational queries with strong, content-rich top 10s, the briefs are excellent. On long-tail queries where the SERP is dominated by Reddit threads, YouTube videos, forums, or thin product pages, Frase struggles. We saw “only 4 competitors found” warnings on 3 of 22 briefs — all of them long-tail meal-kit queries with under 100 monthly searches. In those cases, Frase falls back to a thin topic list and a generic outline, and you end up doing 80% of the manual SERP work the tool was supposed to remove.
Surfer SEO has the same limitation — every SERP-scraping content tool does — but the failure mode is more obvious in Frase because the brief still appears to “succeed”. You don’t realise you’re working from shallow data until you check the source list and see only four URLs scraped. We learned to spot-check the source count before trusting any brief, but that’s one more friction step the marketing doesn’t mention.
Basic plan article cap bites earlier than expected
Basic includes 30 article documents per month. Sounds plenty until you realise that every brief, every optimisation document, and every AI-writer session counts as one article — they’re all the same “document” in Frase’s accounting. We hit the 30-article limit on day 24 of a 30-day month, mid-way through optimising a meal-kit roundup for our third client. The fix is either waiting six days for the cap to reset (and missing client deadlines) or upgrading to Team at $115/month which unlocks unlimited articles and adds two extra seats. For a solo freelancer running serious volume, the Basic plan is a soft cap, not the hard 30-article limit Frase implies.

Skip the Pro add-on unless you’re committed to AI drafting — the writer hallucinated on 2 of 3 test articles. For prose, $20/month for Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus produces better drafts at lower cost.
